Hewlett Packard and Intel announced that they are forming an alliance to make high-performance computing (HPC) more accessible to enterprises via best practices and tailored hardware. The companies will create centres of excellence that revolve around best practices for planning, deploying and managing HPC gear.
Hardware vendors are increasingly eyeing HPC as a growth avenue because enterprises need the horsepower for analytics and big data workloads. Traditionally, HPC use has been limited to academics and governments.
The challenge for these HPC players is that workloads can be delivered via pay-as-you go cloud models. It's not clear what types of enterprises will rent HPC vs. build systems.
As for the hardware and framework end of the equation, HP said it will provide its HPC framework, which is based on its Apollo server deployments, to the partnership. Apollo servers run on Intel chips and will revolve around Intel Xeon Phi and Omni-Path interconnect technology.
